Sample Dialog C -
On the Risers

Membership Chair - Our membership drive starts next week! So tonight, rather than talking about how to get potential guests to come to rehearsal, we'll be talking about what to say to guests when they come to rehearsal. In this skit, our member comes to rehearsal, only to find a new guest standing in her spot on the risers. Let's see how she reacts to the situation...

Script #1

Member - You must be new.

Guest - Yes, this is my first night.

Member - Well, you’re standing in my spot!

Guest - Oh, I’m sorry. The director told me I could stand here.

Member - Well, if you stand here you’ll be in the way when we do choreography. You don’t want to get hit, do you?

Guest - No, I guess not.

Member - You can just stand over there next to the leads.

Guest - Leads? I thought I was supposed to sing baritone…

Member - Well, there isn’t any open spot next to baritones, so you’ll just have to stand next to the leads. You’ll find your part eventually. Oh, it looks like the director wants to start.

Guest - What was the name of the song she said we’re going to sing? I can’t find it in this folder.

Member - I don’t know. Now be quiet, we’re not supposed to talk on the risers!

Membership Chair - Gee, does any of this sound familiar to you? Remember, when you're working with guests, they're completely new to our little Sweet Adeline world. Use common sense and try to put yourself in her shoes. Let's see if our member can find a way to help our guest yet still stand in her spot on the risers.

Script #2

Member - Hi, are you a new guest tonight?

Guest - Yes, my name’s Jane.

Member - Nice to meet you, Jane. I’m Sally. What part do you sing?

Guest - I think the director said baritone.

Member - Okay, well I sing bass, so why don’t you stand right on this side of me – that way you can hear a baritone behind you and you won’t have to hear a lot of bass.

Guest - All right.

Member - Well, it looks like the director wants to get started. We try not to talk on the risers, but if you need any help finding the right music or whatever, let me know and I’ll try to help you out.

Guest - That would be great, thanks a lot!

Member - No problem. It’s my pleasure. We’re glad you came to visit us tonight.

Membership Chair - So you see, working with guests isn't a complicated science. It just takes a little bit of kindness, friendliness and common sense. Thanks for working so hard to help make our membership drive a success this year. The guests you bring and the things you say to them are the things that will really make a difference in making them feel welcome. Let's show our guests what a wonderful chorus we belong to!
